Secondary education in Kenya lasts for four years, following on from eight years of primary education. All education is carried out in English which is the official language of Kenya, though for most students it is their third language after their mother tongue and Kiswahili. In Forms One and Two students study all these subjects, but in Forms Three and Four they study eight subjects – choosing between Physics and Biology, between History and Christian Religious Education and between Agriculture and Business Studies.

At the end of Form Four, students will take the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E.). The results of this are what determines if a student is offered a place at university.
